Enhancing Instructional Leadership: The Science of Reading and Effective Learning Walk Protocols

Enhancing Instructional Leadership: The Science of Reading and Effective Learning Walk Protocols (Cohort 1)

The Mississippi Department of Education’s Division of Literacy is pleased to announce that registration is now open for the asynchronous course “Enhancing Instructional Leadership: The Science of Reading and Effective Learning Walk Protocols.” This course provides school leaders with a framework for capturing a "snapshot" of evidence-based literacy instruction on key elements of Science of Reading practices. These elements include the application of structured literacy concepts, instructional strategies, classroom atmosphere, preparation with high-quality instructional materials (HQIM), writing instruction, and Tier 1 flexible teacher-led small groups and literacy stations.

By the end of this course, participants will gain a solid understanding of the Science of Reading and Structured Literacy Practices, learn how to use the MDE K-3 Learning Walk Protocol as an observational tool to support teachers, and increase their ability to observe literacy instruction in the classroom to improve instructional practices.

This series of professional learning sessions is designed to equip literacy leaders with the skills needed to effectively use the Mississippi K-3 Learning Walk Protocol to enhance the implementation of evidence-based literacy instruction in the classroom.

The asynchronous courses will be offered in 10-week increments from October 2024 through June 2025.
